Our Common Faith - Giving in Hard Times

OUR COMMON FAITH - Giving in Hard Times
by Marilyn Gatrelle

In tough economic times people feel the need, and rightly so, to cut back on spending. Unfortunately, that includes giving. Money is tight, hours and/or salaries may be cut, jobs are lost altogether. As purse strings tighten there is less to go around. But as Christians we should always be concerned about those less fortunate. Jesus said there will always be poor among us. Sometimes more in need, sometimes less.

As we struggle to make our own ends meet we must include giving in our budget. We can not afford to cut back on our tithing. If we are faithful, God will provide. Every church should have a food pantry, clothes closet and a benevolent fund to help families in emergencies. If your church is too small for such then check into the bigger ones and contribute to them. Encourage the powers that be to get something started if you see none.

Don’t feel you have any extra cash to spare? Is there anything you can do without, go without, or sell? We may need to open our eyes to the people around us. There may be struggles we are unaware of. Maybe it’s time you can give. Driving someone somewhere, car pool to jobs, offer to exchange services.

Every little bit when added together can be a lot. Nothing is to small or to little. Our common faith shows compassion on the poor in the name of Jesus.
